Gujarat University has appointed Dr Pruthul Desai as its new Vice-Chancellor, ending the wait for a permanent head of the university. Dr Desai is currently the Principal of Sir P.T. Sarvajanik College of Science in Surat and will hold the post for five years. His appointment was announced on 7 November.
A five-year term at the helm
He was appointed Vice-Chancellor under Section 10(4) of the Gujarat University Act, 1949. The Act allows the Vice-Chancellor to serve for five years or until he turns 65, whichever comes first.
The five-year term gives the university stable leadership at the top. The university has been without a permanent Vice-Chancellor for some time.
Dr Pruthul Desai has been serving as Principal of Sir P.T. Sarvajanik College of Science in Surat. The college is an autonomous college affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University.
He is also reported to be associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His selection has drawn attention to his academic background and his association with the organisation.
Taking over from in-charge Vice-Chancellor
With this appointment, Dr Desai will take over from Jagdish Joshi, who was serving as in-charge Vice-Chancellor. Joshi had been handling the university's top administrative responsibilities until the permanent appointment was announced.
The change at the top comes as students, teachers and staff expect better facilities, improved education standards and smooth administration.
Dr Desai will now be responsible for managing the university's academic activities, administration and overall development. His leadership and decisions over the next five years will play an important role in shaping the university's future.
Gujarat University is one of the state's major universities, and the appointment of a permanent Vice-Chancellor is an important development for its students and staff, who have waited for a full-time head.
