Chatra district police in Jharkhand arrested three youths with illegal firearms, saying they stopped a suspected plan for a major crime before it could be carried out. Police said they foiled a suspected criminal conspiracy after acting on a tip-off, and the arrests were made on Saturday, 7 November 2026.
The three arrested men were identified as Mukesh Kumar, son of Tokhlal Yadav and a resident of Medwadi village, Nitish Kumar, son of Lakhan Yadav and a resident of Bhoridih village, and Abhishek Kumar, son of Chandrika Yadav and a resident of Madarpur village. Police said all three belong to the Kunda police station area of the district.
Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sunny Vardhan said Superintendent of Police Animesh Nathani had received confidential information that two to four youths with criminal backgrounds were planning a major crime using illegal weapons. Acting on the directions of the Superintendent of Police, a special raiding team was formed under the leadership of the Sadar SDPO.
What police recovered from the three men
Police recovered two country-made pistols, one regular pistol, three live cartridges, three mobile phones and Rs 3,500 in cash from their possession. The recoveries were made during the raid that followed the tip-off.
The seizures suggest the group was equipped to carry out a serious crime, police said. The mobile phones are expected to be examined as part of the investigation, to find out who the three men were in contact with and what exactly they were planning.
Cases already registered against two of the accused
According to the SDPO, an FIR, Case No. 192/25, is already registered against Nitish Kumar at Sadar police station. Mukesh Kumar has six cases registered against him across Kunda, Pratappur, Lawalong and Manatu police stations.
Police said the earlier cases against the two men show they were already known to the police before this arrest. The third accused, Abhishek Kumar, was arrested along with them during the same operation.
A tip-off that stopped the plan in time
Chatra lies in Jharkhand's North Chotanagpur division, close to the Bihar border. Police said the operation began when the district police chief received the confidential information, and the special team moved in before the suspected plan could be carried out.
Police said further questioning of the three men is continuing, to find out what crime was being planned and whether any other people were involved. No further arrests had been reported at the time the report was published.
