Mumbai Indians are reportedly close to trading Hardik Pandya to Punjab Kings for Arshdeep Singh ahead of IPL 2027, in what would be one of the biggest player trades in the league's history. Both franchises are understood to have submitted expressions of interest to the IPL, and the players' written consent is the next step before final negotiations and official approval.

The deal is reported, not officially announced. No confirmation has come from either franchise or the IPL, and the trade would only become final once both players agree in writing and the league gives its approval.

If it goes through, the trade would end Hardik's second stint at Mumbai Indians after three seasons as captain. Arshdeep would leave Punjab Kings for the first time since his IPL debut in 2019, having played his entire IPL career with the franchise.

Why Mumbai want Arshdeep

Mumbai Indians finished ninth in IPL 2026, and the team needs a quality Indian pacer to partner Jasprit Bumrah. Trent Boult, bought for Rs 12.5 crore at the 2025 mega auction, struggled for form and played only five matches, and his release is an option the franchise is considering.

Arshdeep Singh has taken 111 wickets in 96 IPL appearances for Punjab Kings, at an economy rate of 9.18. He was Player of the Match in his most recent IPL appearance at Wankhede, and his ability to bowl in the powerplay and at the death makes him one of the most sought-after Indian pacers in the league.

Hardik's Mumbai captaincy

Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 in an all-cash transfer, replacing Rohit Sharma as captain. The move was controversial at the time, and the results have been mixed.

Mumbai finished bottom in 2024, reached the playoffs in 2025, and finished ninth in 2026. Hardik's record as Mumbai captain is 15 wins and 24 defeats in 39 matches, a win-loss ratio of 0.625, which is the lowest among IPL captains with 30 or more matches, excluding Super Overs.

At Gujarat Titans, Hardik's record was very different, with 22 wins in 31 matches and a win-loss ratio of 2.444. He led the Titans to the title in their first season in 2022 and to the final in 2023.

How the trade came about

Hardik is understood to have discussed his future with Mumbai Indians after the 2026 season and asked to be released. Mumbai explored trades with almost every other team, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru reportedly the exception, before settling on the Punjab Kings deal.

Punjab Kings, who reached the final in 2025, have other Indian seamers in Yash Thakur and Vijaykumar Vyshak, but the franchise is understood to be keen on Hardik's all-round ability and leadership experience.

The coaching setup

Mumbai Indians have a new coaching setup for the 2027 season, with Kieron Pollard as head coach, Robin Uthappa as batting coach, Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach, and T Dilip as fielding coach. The franchise will be looking to rebuild after three disappointing seasons.

The retention deadline is 17 November, and the mini auction is scheduled for 16 December in Goa. The Hardik-Arshdeep trade, if completed, would be the headline move of the retention window.
