A woman died on Saturday afternoon after a balcony of a dilapidated apartment complex collapsed near Gurudwara Chokdi in Jamnagar. The incident occurred at around 12:30 pm at the R.T. Jadeja Flats, and it has left the victim's family in deep shock and sparked widespread grief across the locality.

The victim was identified as 35 to 40-year-old Varshaba Abhijitsinh Jadeja. She was standing on the second-floor balcony when the structure suddenly caved in with a loud crash. She fell to the ground with the debris and was trapped underneath, causing panic across the neighbourhood.

Rescue under the rubble

Upon receiving an emergency call at 12:30 pm, the Jamnagar Fire Brigade dispatched a rescue team to the spot immediately. Fire Officer Anwar Gajjan said emergency personnel worked under challenging conditions to clear the heavy rubble and pull the woman out.

Rescuers rushed her to the nearby G.G. Hospital for urgent medical care. However, attending doctors declared her dead on arrival before any treatment could be administered.

The speed of the fire brigade's response could not change the outcome. The weight of the collapsed structure and the fall itself had caused fatal injuries, and the hospital could only confirm the death.

Unsafe structure torn down

Following the fatal collapse, fire brigade personnel initiated precautionary operations to tear down the remaining unstable sections of the building's balcony. Officials carried out the controlled removal to eliminate safety hazards and prevent further accidents for residents and passersby in the area.

The demolition of the unstable sections was a direct response to the risk the building still posed. With one balcony already down, the remaining structure could not be left standing over a lane used by residents every day.

The tragedy has raised questions about the condition of old residential buildings in the city. A balcony that residents use daily gave way without warning, and the collapse shows how quickly a weakened structure can turn fatal.

For the family, the loss came without warning on a routine Saturday afternoon. Neighbours gathered at the spot as the rescue went on, and the lane stayed crowded long after the rubble was cleared.
