Before Bigg Boss 20 made him a household name, Yung DSA was a rapper from Yerwada in Pune who worked at a BPO to support his family while chasing music on the side. His real name is Harsh Vijay Machare, and his breakout song "Yeda Yung" turned him from a local name into one of Indian hip-hop's most talked-about new voices. In September 2026 he walked into the Bigg Boss house, and within days he had become the season's first captain.
His rise has been fast, but it did not come out of nowhere. He had been rapping since he was around 12 years old, writing and performing in the streets and neighbourhoods of Yerwada, and building a sound rooted in Marathi and Hindi street slang mixed with Indian instruments. That sound is what finally broke through.
From Yerwada to the Mic
Yung DSA grew up in Yerwada Kanjar Bhat, a neighbourhood in Pune, Maharashtra, and its culture runs through his music. He has spoken about starting to rap when he was around 12, and about working at a BPO while trying to keep his music dream alive. In an interview with Rolling Stone India, he said he was working at a BPO trying to support his family while chasing his dreams, and that the biggest change in his life was quitting that job after "Yeda Yung" blew up.
The success of the song let him leave the BPO and focus on music full time. He had been putting out self-produced tracks since 2021, starting with "Yung Sitar" and following it with "Sangeet" in 2023, but it was "Yeda Yung" that changed the scale of his career.
Yeda Yung: The Song That Changed Everything
"Yeda Yung" was released in September 2024 through Gully Gang Records, the label founded by DIVINE, with production by YD, also known as Year Down. Yung DSA is credited as the artist, vocalist, lyricist and composer on the track, a sitar-infused Marathi-Hindi street rap built on trap beats that went viral in 2025.
By May 2025, the song had gathered 58 million views on YouTube, more than 22 million streams on Spotify and nearly 4 million Reels, according to Rolling Stone India. Billboard India later described it as a 100-million-plus-view phenomenon, and Yung DSA was named to Billboard India's 2026 list of 25 under-25 hip-hop artists.
The songs that followed kept him in the spotlight. "Maaf Kar", released in 2025 through Sony Music India and produced by Cosmo Drop, was his major-label debut and a reflection on sudden fame. "Chala Kalti" followed in 2025, "Rade Rapate" in 2026 through Gully Gang Records, and "Fachadi", a bilingual Hindi-Marathi single about betrayal and loyalty built on tabla and flute, arrived on 3 August 2026. He also contributed rap vocals to "Goni Mein Paisa" for the Netflix film Toaster, starring Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, with composer Aman Pant.
Bigg Boss 20: The First Captain
Bigg Boss 20 premiered on 6 September 2026, hosted by Salman Khan and airing on JioHotstar at 9 pm and Colors at 10:30 pm. The season's theme gave every housemate two lives, or lifelines, and Yung DSA made his mark almost immediately.
On Day 4, in the first week, he won the Movie Theatre captaincy task, in which he sat with a popcorn bucket alongside Aasif Khan and Kushal Tanwar, known as Gullu, while housemates filled the bucket of the contestant they wanted as captain. Yung won the task and became the season's first captain, listed as House Captain for Week 2. As captain, he took a lifeline from Kanika Mann. Gullu won the next captaincy task on Day 11.
His time in the house has not been smooth since. In Week 3, Aman Gandhi took his lifeline to get luxury ration, leaving Yung on one life. On Day 26, Rhiti Tiwari was evicted by a consensual decision of the captaincy nominees Mahhi Vij, Uditi Singh and Yung DSA. And on 11 and 12 October, Salman Khan reprimanded Yung DSA and ScoutOP on Weekend Ka Vaar for provoking Qazi Touqeer, who was suffering from dengue, calling them bullies. Both apologised.
The 29 October Clash and Where He Stands Now
The biggest flashpoint of his season came on 29 October, in episode 54, during a shape-based captaincy task in the garden. Kanika Mann won the task and became captain, which made her immune from the Week 9 nominations. Gullu and Yung clashed after both were knocked out of the task for failing to get into the shapes in time, with reports describing the confrontation in different words, from almost physical to pushing. Manish Goel suffered an asthma attack while separating them and was taken to the medical room. No punishment or eviction of Gullu was reported after the incident.
On 1 November, Aasif Khan was evicted on Day 56, and Yung was visibly emotional at his exit. On 2 November, the Week 9 nominations were decided through a Chain Reaction task, with Mahhi Vij, Aamrapali Dubey, Arishfa Khan, ScoutOP, Uditi Singh and Manish Goel nominated. Yung DSA was safe for the week.
In the Family Week episodes that followed, Kanika Mann sacrificed her own lifeline so that Yung could hear an audio message from his family, and he broke down on hearing it. In an episode aired on 4 November, Yung told fellow contestant ScoutOP that he had cheated on his girlfriend Samiksha multiple times. As of 5 November, Yung DSA is still in the house, not nominated in Week 9, and on his last lifeline, with 11 contestants remaining. The Week 9 eviction is due at the Weekend Ka Vaar on 7 and 8 November. His music is on Spotify and Apple Music, and he is on Instagram and YouTube as @yung_dsa.
