Towhid Hridoy hit an unbeaten 242, the highest Test score by a Bangladesh batter, passing Mushfiqur Rahim's 219, to give Bangladesh a 30-run first-innings lead over West Indies on Day 3 of the second Test in Sylhet.
Bangladesh made 386 in reply to West Indies' 356. Bad light ended play early with West Indies on 7 for no wicket in their second innings, still 23 runs behind.
Hridoy's innings came off 359 balls and included 22 fours and 11 sixes, the most sixes by a Bangladesh batter in a Test innings. He resumed the day on 29 and added 213 runs in a single day, beating Shakib Al Hasan's record of 212 runs in a day for Bangladesh.
A day of records
Hridoy became only the fourth Bangladesh batter to score a Test double century. His 242 is also the highest score at Sylhet, passing Mahmudul Hasan Joy's 171.
The innings was built on a 117-run eighth-wicket stand with Taijul Islam, who made 22. The partnership took Bangladesh past the West Indies total and into the lead after the top order had done the early work.
West Indies first innings
West Indies had made 356 in their first innings, with Amir Jangoo scoring 133. Hasan Mahmud took six wickets for 90 runs for Bangladesh, the best bowling figures of the match so far.
The first-innings lead of 30 runs is a useful one for Bangladesh, but the match remains in the balance with West Indies batting again and two days still to play.
What the record means
Passing Mushfiqur Rahim's 219 is a significant moment for Hridoy and for Bangladesh cricket. Mushfiqur has been the standard-bearer for Bangladesh batting for years, and Hridoy's innings now sits above his best.
At 242 not out, Hridoy will have a chance to add to the record when Bangladesh bat again, if the match reaches that stage. For now, the innings stands as the finest by a Bangladesh batter in Test cricket.
