A young man from Tripura was allegedly harassed in the national capital, and once a video of the episode began circulating, the reaction was swift and angry. The clip has once again put the treatment of people from the Northeast in mainland cities under an uncomfortable spotlight.
What the Video Allegedly Shows
The main accused identified in the case is YouTuber Amir Shaukin. The youth was allegedly subjected to physical harassment, and the video is said to capture racial slurs like "Chinky" and "Chinese" being thrown at him. Derogatory comments about Tripura were also allegedly made.
These claims rest on the viral clip and the complaint that followed. Nothing has been proven yet, the accused has not been convicted, and the investigation will decide what actually happened.
Students' Body Files FIR, MP Writes to Police Chief
The Tripura Students' Forum has lodged an FIR over the incident and wants the accused acted against. Meghalaya MP James Sangma has separately pressed the Delhi Police Commissioner, through a post on his X handle, to get the matter investigated.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has also weighed in, insisting that whoever is responsible must face proper punishment and learn from it.
An Old Wound: Bias Against the Northeast
Incidents like this keep resurfacing the same question: why do people from Northeast India still face name-calling and bias in the capital? With an FIR now filed and leaders across parties speaking up, the demand this time is for action that is visible, not just statements.
