The Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) regional examination centre in Shivamogga has come under the scanner after allegations that students were allowed to use books and mobile phones inside the examination hall in exchange for Rs 1,000 per subject. The centre, located near Alkola Circle, conducts the university's undergraduate and postgraduate examinations for students of the district and nearby areas.

What the allegations say

Regional Director B.M. Swamy has been accused of allowing students to copy answers in return for money. Reports claim that footage from inside the hall shows students writing their papers with books open beside them and mobile phones kept on their desks, while the staff on duty did not intervene. Staff members at the centre have also allegedly collected money from students in exchange for letting them cheat.

Exams running till November 20

The university's undergraduate and postgraduate examinations began on October 7 and are scheduled to continue until November 20. The allegations relate to this ongoing examination session at the Shivamogga centre.

Demand for inspection and criminal cases

Members of the public have demanded that the Higher Education Department and the KSOU Vice-Chancellor inspect the examination centre and register criminal cases against officials found responsible. The charges against the centre and its Regional Director remain allegations at this stage, and the next step depends on whether the university and the department order a probe.
