Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has completed about 15 days in theatres and continues to dominate the box office.
The film has become the second-biggest earner of the year, and its worldwide total is now closing in on Rs 767 crore.
Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 has also held strong, taking third place among the year's top earners, while Ayushmann Khurrana's Udta Teer, despite good reviews, has struggled to find its audience.
Jailer 2 day 15 numbers
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Jailer 2 earned Rs 5.90 crore in India on its 15th day, which was a Thursday. With that, the film's total in India has reached Rs 429.55 crore. The film is also performing strongly overseas, earning about Rs 2.00 crore abroad on day 15. Its worldwide total now stands at about Rs 766.65 crore, a huge figure for a film in its third week.
What Jailer 2 is about
Jailer 2 picks up the story from where Jailer ended, with Rajinikanth returning as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Pandian wants to live a quiet life away from his violent past, with his wife Vijaya, played by Ramya Krishnan, his daughter-in-law Shweta, played by Mirna, and his grandson Rithvik. But old scores and the fire of revenge pull him back into the world of violence and crime that he had tried to leave behind.
Drishyam 3 holds strong on day 28
Drishyam 3, which has been running in theatres for about 28 days, earned about Rs 0.90 crore on its 28th day. The suspense crime thriller, directed by Abhishek Pathak, has now earned Rs 373.00 crore at the domestic box office. Overseas, the film has earned about Rs 132.05 crore, taking its worldwide total to Rs 578.77 crore. The story continues from Drishyam 2, with Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar once again protecting his family with new tricks, while the parents of Sam, played by Tabu and Rajat Kapoor, still seek justice and revenge for their son's death. The cast also includes Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj.
Udta Teer still below budget
Udta Teer, the story of a Pakistani spy starring Ayushmann Khurrana, earned Rs 2.25 crore on its seventh day, which was actually more than Drishyam 3 earned that Thursday. The film's total in India so far is Rs 30.90 crore, with a worldwide total of about Rs 45.86 crore. However, the film has still not reached its reported budget of about Rs 65 crore, despite creating a buzz with its trailer and receiving good reviews. The contrast between the three films shows how unpredictable the box office remains, with a big star vehicle racing ahead while a well-reviewed smaller film fights to recover its cost.
