In 1977, after the Emergency ended and a new government took office, Coca-Cola's refusal to share its secret formula and reduce its stake led to its licence being cancelled, and India launched its first government cola, Double Seven. The drink became a symbol of economic self-reliance, but it could not survive competition or the return of earlier politics.
